The first trailer for “Annihilation,” the new sci-fi thriller from “Ex Machina” director Alex Garland, is here and it looks amazing.

Natalie Portman stars as a biologist who volunteers to explore the site of an environmental disaster so she can find her missing husband (Oscar Isaac). Joining her are Jennifer Jason Leigh as the Psychologist, Gina Rodriguez as Anya Thorensen, the Anthropologist, Tessa Thompson as the Surveyor, and Tuva Novotny as the Linguist.

Among the odd things they see in the zone: strange deer with flowering antlers and a crocodile-like creature, not to mention what looks like people who have been turned into trees.

It’s based on the novel of the same name by Jeff VanderMeer.

“Annihilation” opens on February 23, 2018.
