The first trailer for Robert Zemeckis’s remake of “The Witches” shows Anne Hathaway sporting an outrageous accent as the Grand High Witch. (The villain was played by Anjelica Huston in Nicolas Roeg’s 1990 version of the Roald Dahl book.)
All the animals in the film, which is set in Alabama during the 1960s, appear to be CGI, including Hathaway’s black cat.
Since all witches hate children (naturally), they turn some unfortunate boys into mice and then try to have the proprietor of the hotel, Mr. Stringer (Stanley Tucci), exterminate them. The cat seems eager to help in that regard.

The trailer is narrated by Chris Rock, who is looking back on his run-in with the witches as a boy (played by Jahzir Kadeem Bruno). His grandmother (Octavia Spencer) helps him face down the evil witches after he and his friend are turned into mice.
And, in this version, The Grandmother seems to have some magic powers of her own. Zemeckis has said his version is closer to the original Dahl book than the 1990 version, which was set in 1980s England.
The movie, which was originally due to hit theaters this month, will now premiere on HBO Max on October 22.
